ELECTRO is part of a series of sculptures about waves of energy. Electromagnetism is a fundamental force which holds stuff together. The work shows the 2 waves, the electric wave and the magnetic wave, which run concurrently and defines the force. They each travel in a different plane in the same direction. When these undulations are given solidity, they appear as wings of flight, journeying.
This piece is part of a body of work which explores scientific principles concerning energy. It is copper in colour because copper coiled wire creates an electrical current. In Greek, ‘electron,’ translates as ‘amber’, alluding to copper. It was noted by the earliest civilisations that amber was significant for possessing static electricity and attracting light particles.
