Mudeford Series
The Mudeford series is about different types of seaweed, observed from above the water on a calm day when the plumes of wrack floated vertically towards the surface, and sea lettuce was suspended in the waves just beyond the sea shore. Mudeford has clear water when it’s calm and plenty of seaweed to admire. I saw the tangle of marine plants when paddling on the sea and peering into the depths, observing the buoyant algae forms and enjoying their colour, whilst considering reflections on the water of the light and sky above.
Mudeford is in Dorset, by Hengistbury Head and has Site of Special Scientific Interest status, in addition to history as a thriving Iron Age settlement and trading centre.
These works all have a glass face which is painted in glass enamels and references an experience of place. The glass painting is fired to make the colours permanent and is then cut and collaged. This series is different to the Vermeer series in the contours of the face of the panel, which is constructed in sustainable timber and cork to echo the heave of the waves.
